Gladys Mae West (Born 1930/31 in Sutherland, Virginia) is an American mathematician who is known for her contributions to the mathematical modeling of the shape of the earth and her work on the development of satellite geodesy models that were eventually incorporated into the Global Positioning System aka, GPS. ![]() ![]() So every time you use GPS on your phone or in your car, you have Gladys Mae West to thank. This work was used to pave the way for Global Positioning Systems. Her father, a prize fighter in his youth, operated a livery. West spent the next decade developing algorithms and calculations for computers to yield an accurate depiction of the Earth’s shape. government and landed a job in 1956 working at the Naval Proving Ground in Dahlgren, Virginia, as a mathematician and programmer. Born in 1893 in Brooklyn, New York, Mae West grew up in a middle-class home in the Bushwick section. West was able to apply her knowledge and experience with satellite data analysis to successfully put together a model of the Earth’s shape on the Seasat altimetry project. Her family was an African-American farming. She eventually got opportunities to work as a programmer and project manager for satellite data processing.
